It seems as though out of nowhere the end of summer is upon us. We still have a little bit of time before it is officially fall, but it is impossible to go anywhere these days without images of fall clothing being shoved in our faces. We’ve had a mild summer here in DC by pretty much every account, so I am not eager for fall to begin. That said, I have finally started to get the hang of the whole seasonal dressing schtick, and have started thinking about a few gaps in my wardrobe that I would like to fill. I figured this week was as good as any to really focus in on what I’m thinking of.
Today’s selection may seem a little specific for some, but I am really craving a gingham button up shirt this fall. I have visions of wearing it alone or under sweaters. I’ve seen a few examples on Pinterest and the thought of gingham has just been building in my mind. Here are a few from around the web:
This lovely selection is from J.Crew Factory. Surprisingly, regular J.Crew does not have any similar styles despite me being 100% sure that this was a standard for them. I guess not. At $54.50 and 100% cotton, this is a strong contender. It’s a navy and not black (which is what I’m leaning towards). Also, I’ve found recently that J.Crew Factory pieces can be really hit or miss quality wise, so I am hesitant to immediately pull the trigger on this one.
Next up in the world of “why is Gingham only available in navy,” I give you the Fitted Boyfriend Gingham Shirt from Gap. This one is currently on sale for $34.99 which seems like a good price to pay. I’ve find that Gap tends to do certain things really well from year to year and while other items may have construction issues, I find their button ups tend to last for me. If you are looking for navy and a slightly smaller pattern, this could be the gingham for you.
Except, Gap has a black option. The Fitted Boyfriend Dot Gingham Shirt comes in black! At $54.95 it is more expensive than other options, but as I said, I have confidence that Gap quality would be worth it. There is only one review (from someone who appears to be much smaller than me) complaining that the fit is too loose. I know that I could get it tailored in if there was really an issue.
Next up: The Non-Iron Three-Quarter Sleeve Gingham Dress Shirt in Navy from Brooks Brothers. Real talk: I have considered throwing out all of the tops in my closet and replacing them with non-irons from BB. The thought of always looking professional while having minimal planning to do is just extremely tempting. This one runs $98 and while BB is known for extremely high quality, I am not thrilled with three-quarter length sleeves. This would be a harder top to pull off under a sweater once the weather calls for it. The shirt is adorable on its own though.
The Limited also has an option currently on sale for $34.96. Simply called “Gingham Shirt,” this option is not only black and white, it also would allow me to use a gift card to the Limited that I have hanging around (don’t you just love when that happens?!). This is the only option that does not appear to be 100% cotton. Sporting 2% spandex, this option may actually be better for layering under a sweater since it may hold a tighter shape longer (or so I am thinking). We just may have a winner…
I wanted to show an option from Old Navy for a super affordable option, yet another store that I thought would be a shoo in for this shirt, but they only had an oversized grey option. My retail radar must be off today. I’m hoping that through comparisons like this I can add only the things I need to my wardrobe for the upcoming fall and winter seasons. Tune back in tomorrow for another comparison of a cooler weather essential (to me at least)…
